In some cases it is possible to overlay an existing asphalt driveway with another ‘layer’ of asphalt. This can save money on removing the existing driveway and doing the base work. However, there can be drawbacks. Anywhere there are existing cracks, or broken up asphalt, the damage will ‘reflect’ through the new layer. Drainage also needs to be considered. When you add an inch-and-a-half layer of asphalt on top of the existing driveway, the new layer may be higher then your garage floor. Although these problems can be solved, most often overlays are not recommended. When considering an overlay, it’s beneficial to speak with an expert.
